This painting by Eris is an untitled self portrait. Eris didn’t title many of her works, leaving it for others to determine what she was trying to say.

Eris studied her own reflection for an entire year before attempting this self portrait. In the years that followed she often uses her likeness in other pictures, sometimes as a background character. Some felt this was a sign of vanity, but those who knew her well thought it was irony.

Eris was a recluse for most of her adult life and putting herself in paintings with others suggested she was watching others without being one of them.

Whatever the case, no one can gainsay Eris’ raw talent, her contribution to the art world, or the value of her paintings.
