The Book of Lost Wisdom is a series of books with a lot of characters, places and items to remember. To that end, I’m including a glossary, where you can refresh your memory should you need to. A word of warning, though. There will inevitably be spoilers here, so procede with caution. Each entry will state the chapter it’s from, so you can decide if you want to read it.
Allied Kingdoms of Karmenon – formed as a defense against incursion from the Kingdom of Lethe, the Allied Kingdoms started as a mutual defense pact. As Lethe’s power grew, the Allied Kingdoms grew stronger. Though each member is an independent nation, they are ruled by a group of representatives that meet in the city of Pelaro, the capital of the Allied Kingdoms. The Kingdom of Sawheta and Zoloa are the two most powerful nations in the alliance, and have the most political clout. The two kingdoms are long-time rivals, but not enemies.
Ambient Magic (general knowledge) – Unbound magic that can be found everywhere. This magic is relatively useless to the vast majority of spell casters. High level individuals can use ambient magic passively to nourish themselves, or stay awake for long periods of time. It is a source of energy for them.
Andara (general knowledge) – A nation of nomadic, tribal people, who many see as primitive, though their skill at combat can not be denied.
Adventurer’s Guild (general knowledge) – The political body that regulates adventurers and the teams they form. It offers support in exchange for dues and a share of profits. It is the most politically important guild on Thysandrika.
Aldevarian (general knowledge) – The old speech and the language of magic.
Angel Morrow (chapter 4) – The healer responsible for the health of the royal family of Twyl. He lives in the palace at Rish.
Approaching (general knowledge) – The eighth month of the year, when fall becomes winter.
Arimen (general knowledge) – Sylinar’s mate and “father” of the gods. The original gods, considered the greater gods were sired by combining Sylinar’s essence with Arimen’s. Arimen was gifted immortality by Sylinar and vanished over a thousand years before the events of the book. No one knows exactly when. He was one of the greatest warriors that ever lived.
Attaining (general knowledge) – The ninth month of the year.
Battle Song (general knowledge) – A holiday celebrating the battle where King Mavros’ stormed and took the city of Rish from King Herrold of Lethe. Mavros hailed from Andara and proclaimed himself King shortly after that fabled battle.
Birth (general knowledge) – The first month of the year, when spring begins.
Borin (Chapter 8) – Of the race of people called salads, Borin is the healer of the guild team the Misfits of Karmenon.
Captain Jericho (general knowledge) – Also known as Captain of the Wall, Jericho is responsible for the safety of the city of Rish from outside threats.
Captain Maynor (general knowledge) – Head of the palace guard and responsible for security at the palace in general and particularly the safety of the royal family.
Centaur (general knowledge) – Half horse, half human, the centaurs are a sentient race that mostly live in Andara, though small families can be found across the world. Still they are rarely seen outside their own territories.
Chaos (general knowledge) – The fifth month of the year.
Chirkir (general knowledge) – Disc-like creatures that look like low stone platforms with runes carved into them. Chirkir have the ability to send people and items standing on their bodies to any other chirkir.
Class (general knowledge) – A disciple given by a god associated with its own set of skills and abilities.
Cora (Chapter 1) – Dahr’s mother, who died of an unnamed disease in Death’s Doorstep.
Dahr (Chapter 1) – The bastard son of King Terrence of Twyl and a woman he’d met during the war. Originally a kitchen servant, he was befriended by Prince Eric of Twyl and become his personal servant.
Dara class enemies (general knowledge) – black-furred, bipedal monsters that attack travelers or adventurers in the wilderness.
Day of the Dead (general knowledge) – The fourth day of the week on Thysandrika, ruled over by Se Karn, god of the dead.
Day of the Lesser Gods (general knowledge) – Every other month, the first week gains an extra day called the Day of the Lesser Gods. That means of the ten months, five of them have a week with an extra day. This is why some months have 36 days and others have 37.
Day of the Mage (general knowledge) – The second day of the week, ruled over by Iorana, goddess of magic.
Day of the Mother (general knowledge) – The first day of the week, ruled over by Sylinar, goddess of healing.
Day of the Soldier (general knowledge) – The fourth day of the week, ruled over by Sheba, goddess of honor, combat and the hunt.
Death’s Doorstep (general knowledge) – An independent City State on the border of The Plains of Xarinos. Most of the Undead War took place in Death’s Doorstep.
Deloshi (general knowledge) – The god of deception.
Dreek (Chapter 8) – A phase shifter scout. Member of the guild team The Misfits of Karmenon.
Fading (general knowledge) – The tenth and final month of the year. The last month of winter.
Familiar (general knowledge) – An animal or creature linked to a spellcaster. The spell binds the familiar to the caster forcing it to obey.
Final Hope (general knowledge) – Formerly an independent city-state, Final Hope was created by all the civilized kingdoms after the Undead War, as a place to garrison soldiers from the largest countries in the world. Only Lorelei, a kingdom to the South of the Plains of Xarinos, hasn’t joined in the effort to contain the Undead King and his troops, because they’d signed a treaty with the Undead King.
Garne (Chapter 8) – A human warrior, member of the guild team the Misfits of Karmenon.
George (Chapter 6) – A named given to Dahr by Telisian to hide his true name.
Glanx (general knowledge) – A port city on the east coast of Melar.
Grassling (general knowledge) – A noble without a class, as in one who had been rejected by the gods during his transition. Grasslings are like grass, the bottom of the food chain.
Growth (general knowledge) – The second month of the year.
Harvest (general knowledge) – The third month of the year. Spring becomes summer during this month.
Holy Relic (general knowledge) – An item created by a god, often given to a mortal as a reward for exemplary service, or to show favor.
House of Rowan (general knowledge) – A royal house largely pledged to worship of Sheba. The current line of kings in Twyl come from the House of Rowan.
Iorana (general knowledge) – The goddess of magic.
Ishranith Lenis (general knowledge) – Founder of the guild team Misfits of Karmenon.
Jerish (Chapter 5) – King Leonid’s personal servant.
Krell (general knowledge) – A rare breed of cow that produces high quality milk. Krell milk is consumed mostly by royalty and nobles.
Kreve (general knowledge) – A large, black-furred beast with a wide mouth full of razor-sharp teeth, like a giant black wolf, but with a wider head. Their glowing red eyes make people think they are monsters, but they’re animals, though dangerous ones to be sure.
King Duran of Lethe (general knowledge) – A past king of the now conquered Kingdom of Lethe, famous for being assassinated after traveling through a chirkir portal. His murder convinced royalty to avoid using that particular method of transportation.
Kalutu (Chapter 3) – Familiar to both Dahr and Prince Eric of Twyl, Kalutu is a were-owl.
Karmenon (general knowledge) – See Allied Kingdoms of Karmenon
Karmish (general knowledge) – The language spoken by most people in the Allied Kingdoms of Karmenon, containing words and phrases from many of the member kingdoms, the language varies depending on where you learned it. That said, people from different countries within the Allied Kingdoms can usually understand each other.
Kerren (CHapter 13) – An archer during the Undead War, Kerren was a friend of King Terrence, who was killed in battle. Later, King Terrence saw him fighting for the Undead army. Terrence put him down and burned his body so he wouldn’t come back again.
King Herrold of Lethe (general knowledge) Tyrant King of the Kingdom of Lethe, who terrorized much of the world, until Mavros of Andara sacked the city of Rish, and declared himself king.
King Leonid of Melar (general knowledge) – King of Melar, married to Queen Rhea, father of Princess Chari.
King Mavros (general knowledge) – The first king of Twyl. An Andaran warrior who led forces against the Kingdom of Lethe. Best known for the Sacking of the city of Rish.
King Terrence of Twyl (Chapter 1)- The ruler of the Kingdom of Twyl, father of Prince Eric and his bastard son Dahr.
Kingdom of Lethe (general knowledge) – A large kingdom that ceased to exist in 1038 when Rish was sacked and King Herrold was killed. Mavros declared himself King and renamed the Kingdom Twyl, which means Victory in Andaran.
Kingdom of Melar (general knowledge) – Located on the Northeast of the western continent, Melar the major port for shipping merchandise to and from the East, including Death’s Doorstep, Final Hope and Lorelei. It is also strategically important from a milatary standpoint, as the best place to transport troops across The Divide. Many wondered why the Undead King didn’t try to attack Melar, but it has been theorized that he didn’t wish to wage war that far from his place of power. Others believe he didn’t make the attempt, because Xarinos has no navy.
Kingdom of Twyl (general knowledge) – Ruled currently by King Terrence and Queen Treya, Twyl was founded by King Mavros after his improbable defeat of Lethe. King Mavros was born Andaran, but founded Twyl as a deterent to others who might see Andara as weak. His decision to stay in Rish and found Twyl was hailed by some Andarans and denounced by others.
Kryst (general knowledge) – The largest port city in the Kingdom of Twyl, located on the south coast.
Larish (Chapter 9) – The alchemist whose experiments caused many miscarriages and cot deaths. No one knows if the results of his experiments were accidental or intentional.
Leata (general knowledge) – Chamberlain in the palace at Rish, serving King Terrence and Queen Treya.
Learning (general knowledge) – The sixth month of the year. The beginning of fall.
Level Cap (general knowledge) – The level at which someone naturally stops leveling altogether. It is different for different people.
Level Flare (general knowledge) – The shining light that pervades a person when they level. People without levels can’t see level flare at all, nor can those with low levels. Most people can see them at Level 5. Level flare is caused by the soul being infused with divine energy.
Lorelei (general knowledge) – Kingdom to the south of the Plains of Xarinos that has a treaty with the Undead King. Lorelei is famous for their high quality healing potions.
Lord Ormund (Chapter 1) – A mage in the employ of King Terrence and Queen Treya of Twyl. He resides at the palace, though he had no official title.
Lord Terreth (general knowledge) – A great and powerful mage who lived long ago.
Loresday (general knowledge) – The fifth day of the Thysandrikan week.
Manamal (general knowledge) – Animals that, having spent extended time near high concentrations of magic, become sentient and humanoid. Though any animal can become a manamal, they are very rare.
Merck Vanderoth (Chapter 8) – A Fourth level Swindler, who worships Tharin, god of thieves.
Mistmeer (general knowlege) – A large swamp in The Allied Kingdoms of Karmenon that contains expansive and ancient ruins. No one knows what had once been there, but it has long since gone. Mistmeer was also home to a dungeon that had been cleared many years ago.
Mitra (general knowledge) – The goddess of lore and learning.
Nexus (Chapter 6) – A unique class given to Dahr by Telisian during his rather unorthodox transition.
Path of the Warrior (general knowledge) – The name of the path chosen when pledging yourself to Sheba, the goddess of honor, combat and the hunt.
Place of Power (general knowledge) – An area where the ambient magic is much higher than normal. Some scholars have theorized that the reason this happens is because the barrier between the physical world and the Other Realm is weaker in those places, allowing more magic to bleed through.
Plains of Xarinos (general knowledge) – Located on the eastern edge of the known world, the Plains of Xarinos are a barren, desert badlands where nothing grows. Nothing that dies on the Plains of Xarinos remains dead. As such, most humans won’t go anywhere near the place.
Prince Alexi of Melar (general knowledge) – King Leonid’s brother and next in line for the throne.
Prince Eric of Twyl (Chapter 1) – Son of King Terrence and Queen Treya of Twyl and heir to the throne.
Princess Chari of Melar (Chapter 5) – Daughter of King Leonid and Queen Rhea of Melar, betrothed to Prince Eric of Twyl.
Queen Rhea of Melar (general knowledge)- Daughter of King Lynx and Queen Raven of Sawheta, married to King Leonid, mother to Princess Chari.
Queen Treya of Twyl (Chapter 1) – Mother of Prince Eric of Twyl, wife of King Terrence.
Pelaro (general knowledge) – An independent city in the Allied Kingdoms of Karmenon where the ruling council of Karmenon meets to pass laws for the kingdom. Pelaro isn’t part of any individual kingdom so as to maintain the illusion of neutrality, though in reality, the two largest kingdoms in Karmenon make the bulk of the decisions, Sawheta and Zoloa.
Phase Shifter (general knowledge) – A race of shadow-like beings who live in two dimensions and can travel from one to the other at will. Phase Shifts can become incorporeal, walk through walls, and change their shape, though they can not change their color.
Protu (general knowledge) – In the old speech it means power. The first syllable of spell casting, protu sets the amount of power that goes into the casting of a spell.
Ressssen (Chapter 8) – A serpent lord mage, who runs the guild team The Misfits of Karmenon.
Rish (general knowledge) – The capital city of The Kingdom of Twyl.
Salad (general knowledge) – A plant made sentient by long term exposure to magic. A group of individuals sharing this trait, rather than a true race.
Sarith (general knowledge) – The goddess of War and Suffering.
Sarithan Assassins (general knowledge) – A sect of assassins controlled by Sarith’s priesthood.
Se Karn (general knowledge) – The god of death.
Se Karn’s Day – A holiday honoring the dead, practiced in The Allied Kingdoms of Karmenon and The Kingdom of Twyl.
Segra – The second syllable of casting a spell, segra opens the door to another plane of existence. Segra defines the size and shape of the door.
Serpent Lord (general knowledge) – A sentient reptilian race with the heads of serpents. Mostly known for their affinity with magic, Serpent Lords are found mostly in the far east.
Sheba (general knowledge) – The goddess of honor, combat and the hunt.
Sizzle (general knowledge) – A powerful hallucingentic and highly addictive drug (at least in most places).
Soul Journey (Chapter 4) – The soul leaves the body and travels to another plane, such as the Other Realm. Transition is a soul journey.
Stability (general knowledge) – The fourth month of the year.
Striker (Chapter 8) – Human hunter. Part of the guild team the Misfits of Karmenon. Her real name is Trace but everyone calls her striker, due to her ability to hit any target she chooses with a bow.
Striving (general knowledge) – The seventh month of the year, when people prepare for the long winter ahead.
Tank (general knowledge) – In computer games, a tank is a character that can draw aggro (get enemies to attack him) as a way of protecting other people in his party.
Tarlet (general knowledge) – A small town in the Allied Kingdoms of Karmenon
Telisian (Chapter 1) – A powerful being that resides in the Other Realm. A creature of chaos.
Temple District (general knowledge) – The temples in most cities are found together in one area known as the temple district.
Tether (general knowledge) – The bond between a god or powerful being, and the mortal who serves it.
Tharin (general knowledge) – The god of thieves.
The Dancing Moth (general knowledge) – A tavern in the town of Tarlet.
The Horn – A mountain range in the south of the Kingdom of Twyl.
The Misfits of Karmenon (Chapter 8) – A low level adventurer’s guild team led by a Serpent Lord named Ressssen.
The Rat Wardens (Chapter 8) – A guild team who had a run-in with the Misfits of Karmenon at the Dancing Moth tavern.
The Other Realm (Chapter 1) – A place of dreams, magic, gods and demons, also known as the dream realm. It is a plane of existence incompatible with the physical plane, and the place where nobles and royals face trials during their transitions.
The Undead King (general knowledge) – The leader of the undead hoards that roam the Plains of Xarinos. They call themselves the reborn.
The Undead War (general knowledge) – A war fought between the soldiers of the Undead King and the rest of the civilized world. Most of the war took place on Death’s Doorstep, though some of it spilled south into Final Hope.
Thysandrika (general knowledge) – The name of the world in which the story takes place.
Trace (Chapter 8) – See Striker.
Transition (general knowledge) – The coming of age ceremony where nobles and royalty can petition a god or goddess for a class in exchange for agreeing to serve them for the rest of their lives. Generally involves trials that take place in the Other Realm.
Trilsk (general knowledge) – The capital city of Melar.
Trodara (general knowledge) – The smallest dara class enemy. Tro means small and dara means killer. They are 3-4 feet tall, furry and black, mostly attacking with claws and fangs, but occassionally using scavenged weapons from previous encounters.
Undead Farmer (Chapter 13) – Undead farmers are servants of the Undead King who grow new soldiers from corpses.
Veloran (Chapter 1) – High Priest of Sheba for the city of Rish.
Wisita Roth (general knowledge) – Head of the Adventurer’s Guild branch in Tarlet. She is both the mayor of Tarlet and the postmaster. Because of the small size of the town, she isn’t actually a guild master.
Zen (general knowledge) – A page in the palace at Rish, friendly with Prince Eric.
