Glossary 2.36 – The Aptly Named Book of Lost Wisdom Volume Two
The Book of Lost Wisdom is a series with many characters, places, skills, items, and ideas to remember. This glossary is a quick way to restore the context the story expects you to have without retelling the book itself.
A word of warning: there will inevitably be spoilers here, so proceed with caution. Each entry gives the chapter by which it is safe to read. General Knowledge identifies ordinary facts of the world that its people would already know.
A
Adventurer's Guild, The (General Knowledge) - A worldwide organization that registers adventuring teams, issues contracts, and wields considerable political influence.
Aisha (Chapter 2.8) - A reborn woman who runs a farm Eric and Dahr were taken to after their kidnapping. She seems to be in a relationship with Eldiss, another reborn.
Alexi, Prince of Melar (Chapter 2.18) - King Leonid's younger brother, who protects Leonid after the worst mistake of his life. Part of the reason he protects Leonid is because if Leonid is disinherited, Alexi would have to sit the throne, an idea he finds abhorrent.
Alice Trast (Chapter 2.25) - Lady Trast is a trusted friend of Queen Treya.
Alyson (Chapter 2.22) - Rhea's bold childhood friend during the years after Queen Raven's accident.
Ambient Magic (General Knowledge) - Magic that leaks into the physical world from the Other Realm and can affect magically sensitive creatures.
Andara (General Knowledge) - A powerful nation known for its warriors and nomadic traditions.
Andeon Walsh (Chapter 2.6) - Guild master of the Adventurer's Guild chapter in Rish.
Anth (Chapter 2.12) - A human man Striker meets after awakening as reborn in the Plains of Xarinos.
Arimen (General Knowledge) - Sylinar's estranged immortal mate.
B
Bear (Chapter 2.6) - One of the masterless familiars who joins Chari and Kalutu on their holy quest.
Blade of Wrath (Chapter 2.10) - A Sheba specific skill granted when Terrence transitions Supreme Sovereign. This skill hasn’t been granted in hundreds of years.
Bones (Chapter 2.30) - A walking, talking skeletal reborn who helps orient Eric and Suzanna after they reach the Plains of Xarinos.
Borin (Chapter 2.2) - The salad Healer of the Misfits of Karmenon, traveling with the group implicated in the princes' disappearance.
Brethren (Chapter 2.32) - The name the kindred use for members of their own people.
Brotherhood, The (General Knowledge) - An isolated island between the continents Aestra and Gloomhearth though it is closer to Aestra. The kindred have claimed this island as their own, and have lived there for centuries. They have their own culture and way of life. Most humans are terrified of the Brotherhood and avoid it at all costs.
Bruce (Chapter 2.6) - One of the masterless familiars who joins Chari and Kalutu in their holy quest. Bruce is a demin (short for dimensional) spider able to scout, turn invisible, and shift out of phase.
C
Calling, The (Chapter 2.15) - The kindred awakening through which an individual first touches the way, a deeper causal reality that only they can sense. The way acts as a guide to a path called the long journey. The calling is when they set foot in the beginning of that path.
Cech (Chapter 2.13) - A large, highly respected palace guard considered for promotion to captain during the royal family's absence.
Channel Sheba (Chapter 2.10) - A Supreme Sovereign skill that allows Terrence to serve as a direct channel for Sheba.
Chari, Princess (Chapter 2.1) - Eric's newly married wife, who learns on her wedding night that Eric and Dahr have been taken from Rish.
Charles (Chapter 2.30) - An abusive older man from Suzanna's past whose manipulation cost her the right to see her daughters.
Chirkir (General Knowledge) - Ancient magical beings resembling raised stone ritual circles, able to transport people and goods from one to another.
Class (General Knowledge) - A magical role granted through a divine tether, allowing a person to gain levels and skills.
Cora (Chapter 2.31) - Dahr's widowed mother and the owner of an inn in Death's Doorstep. She died two years ago.
D
Dahr, Prince (Chapter 2.1) - One of the kidnapped princes of Twyl, taken from Rish with his half-brother Eric shortly after Eric's wedding. Dahr is the bastard son of King Terrence.
Danny (Chapter 2.5) - The comatose boy on Earth whose body Eric sometimes inhabits during sleep.
Death's Doorstep (General Knowledge) - The city-state bordering the Plains of Xarinos.
Deloshi (General Knowledge) - The god of deception.
Demin Spider (Chapter 2.6) - A dimensional spider that exists in two planes of existence at the same time. It can shift out of phase and become invisible.
Dorean, High Priest (Chapter 2.18) - The high priest of Iorana in Melar when King Leonid was still a prince.
Drake (Chapter 2.6) - One of the masterless familiars who joins Kalutu and Chari on their holy quest.
Dreek (Chapter 2.13) - The phase shifter Scout of the Misfits of Karmenon.
Dungeon (General Knowledge) - A magically structured place of traps, monsters, puzzles, and rewards.
E
Earth (Chapter 2.10) - A world apparently without magic where the Undead King currently resides.
Eldiss (Chapter 2.4) - A huge, bear-like reborn who collects the abducted princes in his cart and carries them south on Striker’s behalf.
Enhanced Detect Lie (Chapter 2.10) - A skill granted to Terrence during his transition from Warrior to Supreme Sovereign.
Enri (Chapter 2.21) - Queen Raven's personal servant who, many years ago, discovered Queen Raven after the magical accident that destroyed her mind.
Eric, Prince (Chapter 2.1) - The kidnapped heir to Twyl, taken from Rish with his half-brother Dahr on the night of his marriage to Princess Chari.
Eyebrows (Chapter 2.12) - The nickname Striker gives the reborn guide who meets her after she awakens in Xarinos.
F
Familiar (General Knowledge) - A sentient magical companion summoned by and bonded to a mortal. This is usually the purview of spell casters, but there are exceptional cases.
Final Hope (General Knowledge) - A country bordering the Plains of Xarinos and home to the World's Garrison.
Flapper (Chapter 2.6) - A beaver familiar and one of the masterless familiars who joins Chari and Kalutu on a holy quest.
G
Gabby (Chapter 2.32) - Nickname of Gabriella, part of the brethren party sent to meet Dahr and Eric.
Gabriella (Chapter 2.15) - A kindred woman who once questioned Lady Fury's certainty about Zephyr's future. Often goes by the nickname Gabby.
Gallen Burke (Chapter 2.13) - A palace guard considered for promotion to captain as Terrence reorganizes responsibility in Rish.
Ganan (Chapter 2.20) - The Andaran hunting party leader whose men and women escort Princess Chari, Kalutu, King Leonid and their respective entourages to Melar.
Garne (Chapter 2.2) - The human Warrior and second-in-command of the Misfits of Karmenon.
George (Chapter 2.20) - Dahr's name for the unseen, multi-tonal entity connected to his Nexus abilities. George is the name Telisian gave to Dahr to hide his identity.
God-Touched (General Knowledge) - A mortal tethered by a god and given a class and levels. Unlike nobles who can choose a god on their 16th birthday and attempt to impress them by passing through trials, god-touched are simply the chosen of the gods. They are highly respected.
Gruff (Chapter 2.6) - A goat, one of the masterless familiars who joins Kalutu and Chari on their holy quest.
H
Healing Potion (General Knowledge) - A common restorative potion; Lorelei is a major source of reliable healing potions.
Holy Shield (Chapter 2.14) - A projection of a god’s will that manifests as a shield.
Human (General Knowledge) - The most populous sentient race in Thysandrika.
I
Iorana (General Knowledge) - The goddess of magic and firstborn of the sibling gods. As with all sibling gods Sylinar created Iorana from both her essence and Arimen’s combined.
J
Ja'quir (General Knowledge) - The capital city of Zoloa in the Allied Kingdoms of Karmenon.
Jericho, Captain (Chapter 2.4) - The officer responsible for Rish's defenses, charged with investigating the princes' disappearance.
Jerish (Chapter 2.17) - King Leonid’s unusually trusted servant, assigned to remain behind and protect Queen Rhea.
K
Kalutu (Chapter 2.1) - Prince Eric and Prince Dahr's were-owl familiar, summoned during Eric’s incomplete transition in the other realm by Dahr, who had, at that time, no knowledge of magic.
Karmenon (General Knowledge) - The Allied Kingdoms of Karmenon, a confederation of kingdoms in northern Aestra, originally formed to stand united against the hostile and unpredictable Kingdom of Lethe.
Kindred (Chapter 2.14) - A telepathically connected human people whose unusual mental abilities include access to a spiritual guide they call the way.
King Lynx (Chapter 2.21) - Queen Rhea's father and current ruler of Zoloa. Married to Queen Raven.
Kreve (Chapter 1.15) - A huge black canine predator with red eyes and a mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth.
L
Lady Fury (Chapter 2.15) - The preeminent kindred seer who raises Zephyr and directs her long journey.
Leata (Chapter 2.1) - The chamberlain in the palace at Rish.
Lek (Chapter 2.20) - A Rish shopkeeper whose soul still bears damage suffered during the Undead War.
Leonid, King (Chapter 2.3) - The king of Melar and Chari's father, still in Rish after his daughter's wedding. Married to Queen Rhea.
Level (General Knowledge) - A measure of growth within a class; gaining levels strengthens existing abilities and may unlock new skills.
Literally Gerrick (Chapter 2.23) - The name Eric gives the character he creates in an Earth video game.
Locate Subject (Chapter 2.10) - A Supreme Sovereign skill that allows Terrence to locate any subject as long as they’re within the boundaries of his kingdom.
Long Journey, The (Chapter 2.15) - The lifelong kindred process of learning and growth that begins with the calling.The long journey is accomplished by unerringly following the way.
Lorco (Chapter 2.13) - A disciplined and respected palace guard considered for the position of Captain after Maynor’s departure from Rish.
Lord Allen (Chapter 2.33) - A Twylian noble whose property dispute is heard while Lady Trast presides over royal court. This is Alice Trast’s first time sitting the throne.
Lord Lehran (Chapter 2.33) - The noble who brings a boundary dispute against Lord Allen before the royal court, during the first time Alice Trast sits the throne.
Lorelei (General Knowledge) - A reclusive nation known for healing potions and for a trade agreement with the Undead King whose terms remain secret.
M
Manamal (General Knowledge) - A humanoid sentient animal descended from creatures changed by generations of magical exposure. Any mammal can become a manamal.
Maynor, Captain (Chapter 2.1) - The trusted captain in the palace at Rish, who aided Striker in kidnapping Prince Eric and Prince Dahr. Somehow, Striker had influenced Maynor, but no one understands the nature of her power.
Mere, Lady (Chapter 2.25) - One of Queen Treya's trusted noble friends, privately known to her as Sandra.
Melar (General Knowledge) - The kingdom in the northwest of Aestra ruled by King Leonid and Queen Rhea. As Melar is the port used to trade with Gloomhearth, Melar is richer than one might expect from a smaller kingdom.
Merck Vanderoth (Chapter 2.2) - The Priest of an unknown god traveling with the Misfits of Karmenon.
Mindy Schwartz (Chapter 2.24) - The Bradsworth household's maid, who overhears a man speaking with Suzanna in her bedroom.
Misfits of Karmenon, The (Chapter 2.2) - The adventuring team tasked with traveling with Captain Maynor to pursue the missing princes.
Mitra (General Knowledge) - The goddess of lore and learning.
Mutt (Chapter 2.6) - A masterless familiar who joins the Kalutu and Chari on a holy quest.
N
Navanata, Queen (Chapter 2.31) - The queen of Sawheta and Queen Treya's aunt by marriage. Married to King Bronen.
Nexus (Chapter 2.4) - Dahr's unique class, which lets him perceive the causal threads that underpin reality.
Nylus (Chapter 2.12) - See Undead King.
O
Obby (Chapter 2.6) - A cube-shaped masterless familiar able to flow around objects and carry them within itself. Obby joined Chari and Kalutu on a holy quest.
Olear (Chapter 2.1) - One of the Melarian guards assigned to Princess Chari's rooms after her wedding.
Ormund, Lord (Chapter 2.1) - The palace mage whose secret actions and past connection to Queen Treya make him a focus of suspicion after the princes vanish.
Other Realm (General Knowledge) - The dreamlike magical realm where transition trials occur. This is a realm of pure probability, wandered by beings that no human has ever heard of, much less seen.
P
Phase Shifter (Chapter 2.6) - A shadowy people who exist partly in the Other Realm and can become incorporeal or change shape; Bruce displays similar abilities.
Plains of Xarinos (General Knowledge) - The land ruled by the Undead King. Nothing buried in Xarinos stays dead. The gods themselves can not penetrate the veil that surrounds it.
Priest (General Knowledge) - A class offered by almost every god, signifying one who represents that god’s law through teaching and sometimes, punishment, depending on the specific god.
Q
Quant (Chapter 2.28) - The kindred man, who was part of the welcoming party for Prince Eric and Prince Dahr during their trip to the Brotherhood.
R
Raven, Queen (Chapter 2.22) - Queen Rhea's mother, a gifted Ioranan mage whose magical accident shattered her mind and her relationship with her daughter.
Reborn (Chapter 2.8) - The name used by people who die and rise again after burial in the Plains of Xarinos; outsiders commonly call them undead.
Rendy (Chapter 2.27) - One of Viajero's wanderers, appearing in around Thysandrika with Wic as great events approach.
Ressssen (Chapter 2.2) - The serpent lord Mage who leads the Misfits of Karmenon.
Rhea, Queen (Chapter 2.1) - The queen of Melar and Chari's mother, whose history becomes central when she is sent abroad as Terrence's ambassador. Daughter of Queen Raven and King Lynx. Wife of King Leonid.
Rish (General Knowledge) - The capital of Twyl, from which Eric and Dahr are secretly removed after Eric and Chari's wedding.
S
Salad (Chapter 2.2) - A sentient plant made sentient and humanoid by prolonged magical exposure; Borin is a salad.
Sam (Chapter 2.6) - A squirrel manamal with a beer fixation and a representative of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Familiars.
Sandra Mere, Lady - See Mere, Lady
Sarith (General Knowledge) - The goddess of war, suffering and assassination. Sarithan assassins are some of the most feared beings in Thysandrika.
Sarith's Cloak (Chapter 2.6) - A holy relic that inflicts terrible pain whenever its wearer knowingly lies.
Sart (Chapter 2.1) - A Melarian guard assigned to Chari whose prejudice against Kalutu quickly brings him into conflict with the princess.
Sawheta (Chapter 2.31) - One of the two large kingdoms in the Allied Kingdoms of Karmenon. The Kingdom of Sawheta and Zoloa are the two strongest kingdoms in the alliance, and control most of the important political decisions made. Other kingdoms end up siding with one or the other. Sawheta is ruled by King Bronen and Queen Navanata.
Scag (Chapter 2.17) - One of the dungeon runners traveling with Swag and Stag when they encounter Chari's group.
Se Karn (General Knowledge) - The god of the dead.
Serpent Lord (General Knowledge) - A humanoid people with a snake’s head and neck and a strong affinity for magic. Females generally have longer necks than men. Called Serpent Lords (even the females) because of the misnomer that they can control snakes (due to the large number of serpent lord snake familiars).
Sheba (General Knowledge) - The goddess of honor, combat, and the hunt.
Sheba's Justice (Chapter 2.10) - An ancient dark-bladed sword given to Terrence upon transitioning to Supreme Sovereign to dispense her justice.
Skill (General Knowledge) - A specific ability granted through a person's class and divine tether.
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Familiars (Chapter 2.6) - The organization, now sheltering several familiars whose masters have died.
Soul Salve (Chapter 2.13) - A skill granted to Queen Treya that allows her to perceive damage within a soul and work toward healing it.
Stag (Chapter 2.17) - One of the dungeon runners traveling with Swag and Scag when they encounter Chari's group.
Stalker (Chapter 2.2) - Striker's kreve companion.
Striker (Chapter 2.2) - The name used by Trace, the Beast Master who influenced Maynor into helping her kidnap Prince Dahr and Prince Eric.
Supreme Sovereign (Chapter 2.10) - The advanced royal class into which Terrence transitions when he hits Level 20.
Suzanna (Chapter 2.5) - Danny's nurse on Earth, who is able to speak directly with Prince Eric when he inhabits Danny's body.
Swag (Chapter 2.17) - Leader of a group of dungeon runners. Swag is short for Swagger. He travels with his companions Stag and Scag.
Sylinar (General Knowledge) - The goddess of healing and mother of the pantheon.
T
Tank (Chapter 2.4) - Eric's rare protective class, granted by Sheba.
Ted (Chapter 2.29) - A reborn man working in a Xarinos coffee shop in Orientation Village, modeled on one from Earth.
Telisian (Chapter 2.20) - The ancient being tethered to Dahr whose involvement reaches across the boundaries between worlds.
Terrence, King (Chapter 2.1) - The king of Twyl, forced to respond to his sons' disappearance while Sheba prepares him for a larger role.
Tether (General Knowledge) - A divine connection to a mortal's soul through which a god grants class, levels, and skills.
Tharin (General Knowledge) - The god of thieves and charlatans.
Thysandrika (General Knowledge) - The world in which the story takes place.
Tier (General Knowledge) - A broad measure of advancement encompassing ten class levels.
Trace - see Striker.
Transition (General Knowledge) - The process by which a divine tether changes a person, granting or transforming a class and skills.
Trast, Lady (Chapter 2.25) - One of Queen Treya's trusted noble friends, privately known to her as Alice.
Treya, Queen (Chapter 2.1) - The queen of Twyl, confronting the disappearance of both sons while old secrets and new divine demands surface around her.
Twyl, Kingdom of (General Knowledge) - The kingdom ruled by Terrence and Treya, founded by Mavros after his conquest of Lethe more than a hundred years ago.
U
Undead King (Chapter 2.4) - The ruler of the Plains of Xarinos, currently residing on Earth. He has chosen the name Nylus though seldom uses it.
Undead War, The (Chapter 2.3) - The war in which the Undead King's forces attacked Death’s Doorstep and fought the allied nations.
V
Veloran (General Knowledge) - The high priest of Sheba in Rish.
Viajero (Chapter 2.27) - The god of travelers, one of the lesser gods.
Voice of Sheba (Chapter 2.10) - The role Terrence accepts as Sheba's mortal voice.
W
Wanderers (Chapter 2.27) - Servants of the lesser god Viajero.
Way, The (Chapter 2.15) - The shared mental current of the kindred, opened fully to an individual by the calling. The way guides a kindred throughout their life.
Were-Owl (Chapter 2.1) - A lycanthrope that is a cross between a man and an owl.
Wic (Chapter 2.27) - One of Viajero's wanderers, appearing in around Thysandrika with Rendy as great events approach.
Willo (Chapter 2.7) - A young palace servant who speaks with Veloran while he is disguised as Princess Chari.
Wingman (Chapter 2.6) - A falcon familiar and one of the masterless familiars who joins Kalutu and Chari on a holy quest. Member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Familiars.
Z
Zephyr (Chapter 2.14) - A young kindred sent from the Brotherhood by Lady Fury to find and assist Eric and Dahr.
Zoloa (General Knowledge) – One of the two large kingdoms in the Allied Kingdoms of Karmenon. The Kingdom of Sawheta and Zoloa are the two strongest kingdoms in the alliance, and control most of the important political decisions made. Other kingdoms end up siding with one or the other. Zoloa is ruled by King Lynx and Queen Raven.
